Curtains make a room—but you need to choose them correctly.
The choice of window treatments boils down to many decisions. With so many
decisions, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed, so here are tips on choosing the
right curtains for your space.
In deciding the choice of curtains, you need to consider the
mood you want to create in the room. For a cozy room, heavy curtains can be used
to prevent natural lighting and light curtains for a casual mood.
Color
Before choosing the color of the curtain, decide if you want
the curtain to blend with the other room decor or contrast. To blend the room decor,
pick curtains that are the same tone as the wall or a few shades darker or a
lighter color.
If you want the window to be an accent feature, you can use
a bold color to create a WOW factor. However, if lots of natural lights get
into the room, the color of the bold curtains may infuse the room or the
sunlight may fade the fabric overtime, but neutral colors are less likely to
fade and will blend with the decor of any room. The best choices are silk,
linen, cotton, velvet. Also lining can
prolong the life of the curtains.
Prints and Patterns
If your room has patterned bedding, rug and furniture,
choose curtains with solid colors i.e. plain colors and if the room has solid color decor, then use a patterned curtain for contrast.
Choice of Fabric
Fabric is an essential part of choosing curtains, since the
material will dictate how well your curtains function and hold up over time.
“If they’re too heavy, they may not fold crisply when drawn; too light and they
may not fall well,"
Linen, silk and velvet are best choices to use
for window treatments since they tend to hang the best..However, faux silk tends to be the most durable. And in a
particularly sunny room, faux silk doesn't deteriorate as quickly as real silk.
Some fabrics also help keep out the cold or make the room cooler.
Curtain Length
Considering the length of the curtain, you need to decide
first how high above the windows you will like it to hang. Please note, the
higher above the window the curtain is placed, it will give a sense of height
to room. Interior designers suggest six inches above the window.
After measuring the width of the window, add four to eight
inches on both sides for fullness and to prevent sunlight from entering the
room.
Ready Made Curtains or Customized Window Treatments
With ready made curtains you may not get as much options,
however I will suggest making your own curtains tailored to your preference, window
dimensions, style, fabric, color, pattern and budget.
