How to choose a paint color confidently

Ever wondered what wall paint color to choose when repainting your home. For some it can be overwhelming, however for me before the end of each year, I already have a new color scheme for my home and yes with the same furniture or furnishings, though I may change a few things ie. throw pillows, wall art etc so as to match the new color scheme. Well here are a few tips on how to confidently choose wall paint colors for your home.

1. Access your existing furniture and furnishings. Pick out a wall art, sofa, rug or any other accessories you like and pick out a color as a main color or accent color and decide on the color scheme you want. For example, if you pick out a wall art, look for a color or colors that will work together and tie in with your wall art.

2. Decide what mood you want to create in the space. For a bedroom, do you want a warm, cozy and relaxing mood, then use warm colors and neutrals which will create that mood.
For a dining room, do you want a sociable and stimulating atmosphere use warm, contrasting and bright colors  eg. red, orange etc or a formal and quiet mood use deeper blue greens and neutrals.
For kids rooms, do you want a relaxing and orderly mood or active and exciting mood. But note brighter colors may lead to unrest and over stimulation.
For a formal atmosphere choose cool colors such as white, blue, green and grey. For a warm and cozy atmosphere choose red, orange

3. Lighting: Natural lighting shows the truest color, incandescent light shows warm tones and yellow while fluorescent lighting shows a light blue tone. Therefore a strong color might be too bright when used on all walls or close to a large window. However it maybe better on an accent wall with indirect light.

4.Understand the color terms: Hue is a color ie red, blue etc. The value is how light or dark it is. Saturation is how dominant the hue is. ie red to pink is less dominant. Intensity is the brilliance of the colors. Tint is got by adding white to a color and tone by adding black to a color.

5. Test your color choice: Be confident, don't be afraid to test your color choice on a small portion of the wall. Be adventurous try colors outside your comfort zone. Consider strong colors or soft deep neutrals as accent colors on one wall .ie olive green, chocolate brown etc. Add character with a strong color on the ceiling.

6. Add more depth to your walls. This can be achieved by adding decorative finishes such as stucco paint or paintable wallpaper which will add depth and make your walls do the talking.

7. Complement the other rooms: make sure the colors flow into the other rooms seamlessly, by using colors which will complement each other.

8. Use the color wheel as a reference tool. Colors like red and green are complementary colors ie. opposite on the color wheel, so they are intense when used together. The color wheel guides you on colors that work together and you may just see a color combination you may love. All the colors on the left of the color wheel are warm ie red to yellow and on the right are cool colors.
ie from yellow green to red violet are cool colors.

9.Monochromatic schemes: use colors in the same color group or same color with contrasting finishes for walls and trims. ie white and off white tint. For accent color, select a warmer or cooler color to complement your main color group.

10. Use different wall finishes: A good way to use same color in a room, is to use the in different finishes. ie Matt white paint on the walls and satin on the trim of the doors. This is good in spaces with lots of doors and windows and little wall space.

Well, I hope this will guide you in choosing the right colors for a space. Mixing colors brings a personal touch to your space.
